Grainger Named a Top
Workplace by Chicago Tribune.
Grainger (NYSE: GWW), the leading broad line supplier of
maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) products serving businesses
and institutions, was named to the Chicago Tribune’s 2013 Top
Workplaces list for the fourth consecutive year. The company ranked
as the 11th best large employer in the Chicago area, based on
feedback from employees who described Grainger as having a
“challenging and rewarding culture” that helps them “continuously
learn and develop new skills.”
“As a distributor we know our customers can buy much of what we sell
from others,” said Grainger’s Senior Vice President and Chief People
Officer Joseph High. “What differentiates us is the service our
people provide by building strong customer relationships.
Attracting, developing and retaining people who are focused on
exceptional service is critical to our success. To drive engagement
we employ multiple strategies such as competitive pay and benefits,
which includes a unique Profit Sharing Trust plan, rewards and
recognition, mentoring and volunteer programs, and stretch
assignments, all in a flexible and an inclusive workplace. Most
importantly, our team members feel they are part of something
meaningful as they help customers keep their facilities running and
the people in them safe.”

The 100 Top
Workplaces are determined solely on employee feedback, based on
a comprehensive survey conducted by WorkplaceDynamics, LLP, a
leading research firm on organizational health and employee
engagement. The list recognizes 100 companies annually for their
workplace culture and divides the winner into three categories -
large, medium and small, based on revenue. WorkplaceDynamics
surveyed 70,000 employees at hundreds of Chicago-area companies
to come up with the 100 best. More than 550 Chicago-area
Grainger team members provided feedback on Grainger’s workplace
environment, including positive ratings on pay and benefits.
Last year, Grainger was also named one of FORTUNE magazine’s 100
Best Companies to Work For. Of the more than 22,000 team members
that work for Grainger, nearly 4,000 are in the Chicago area.
Average team member tenure in the U.S. is nine years, more than
double compared to other public companies.
